Just a personal reflection the the 109th session of the Cape Annual Conference

Bishop Samuel Lawrence Green Sr. saw, he came and he conquered in the Name of Jesus our Lord and Saviour. Determined and resolute he took up the challenges and completed the 109th session of the Cape Annual Conference with grace and style. There is no doubt why St. Marks turned out to become the church it is under his leadership, for leadership and guidance was the order of the day.

The 109th Session commenced with power and force as the familiar processional hymn God of our Fathers signalled the start of this august body. Long before the service commenced the church was filled to capacity. The host pastor Rev. Anthony Jacobs, Presiding Elder of the Paarl District, ordered some very hot weather for us for the duration of the the conference - between 87.8F and 95F.

The Rev Donald Sauls rendred a challenging sermon on thorns and their purpose in our lives. The business session and organization was an indication that this Bishop came prepared and ready to lead this district with a firm, compassionate hand. It was quite clear from the start that we were here on the church's business and no opportunity was given to promote personal agendas. The Board of Examiners reported on their deliberations for the year and 1 Elder and 6 Deacons for up for ordination at this Conference. Bishop Green shared with the conference his desire to ensure that our preachers were well equipped and requested that all deacons to be ordained have some form of higher education. Elders were requested to ensure that they have a diploma or certificate in theology.

Rev David West, the preacher for the Emmaus Walk sermon examined the characters around the scene and the decisions they had to make during this encounter. The Lay organisation presented a program that encouraged the church at large to ensure that they are more involved with work in the community.

Reports received by the Bishop on Thursday/Friday presented the work by the Pastors and their respective congregations. In spite of the economic situation in South Africa, extraordinary efforts were made to support the mission of the church. No pastor was embarrassed by not reporting what was expected.

Bishop Green Sr. made an urgent appeal to the pastors to ensure that they lived up to their calling. The issue of pastors being inebriated, ministers divorced, sexual perversions and all other instances that the Discipline warns of and addresses laid very heavy on the Bishop's heart. He intimated that he will not hesitate to make an example of those who refuse to adhere to this urgent appeal.
